Chapter Six

Lauren wasn’t certain if it was the heat or the sound that woke her. It could have even been the acrid scent in her nostrils, though not enough smoke had penetrated that section of the trailer to render her unconscious. She woke gasping and choking, abruptly aware of the flames around her. The smoke was thick, so she rolled out of bed and dropped to the floor. The floorboards burned her hands and knees because they were so hot. Tears trickled from her eyes from the smoke, and she coughed raggedly as she struggled to draw in a lungful of oxygen that wasn’t available.

The smoke was already scrambling her thought processes, but she was doing her best to gain her bearings and find the quickest way out of the small trailer. Flames blocked the only exit through the small door, and as she lifted her head, she confirmed what she already knew—the two windows in this section were far too small for her to squeeze through even if she could have removed the rolling mechanism that opened them before the fire consumed the rest of the trailer.

It was like a small tinderbox, and she didn’t think she had more than thirty seconds before the flames reached her. She pounded on the side of the trailer, hoping someone nearby would realize she was still alive inside. Surely, the sight and smell of the trailer on fire would have drawn a crowd. The question was, would any of the aliens involved in the Grotesquerie care that a human was burning alive?

The flames leapt closer, and she scooted back. She fell back on her butt, screaming at the pain as flames licked up her leg. The floorboards were hotter than ever, burning her palms and he tender flesh of her buttocks as she scooted back into the corner, pressing herself against the wall, which was also heated enough to burn the flesh of her back. She tried to scream, but she was too busy choking to manage any sound at all.

Still, she heard a roar. For the briefest moment, Lauren thought it had somehow emerged from her, but when Kerr’s form coalesced in the flames, she realized it must have been him. She lifted her arms, and he picked her up, folding her against his body and wrapping his wings around her as he rushed her from the trailer. They went right through the fire, but it clearly had no effect on him.

As soon as they were outside and away from the flames, he parted his wings to allow her fresh air. She drew it in while gasping and choking, trying to clear the smoke from her lungs. She clung to him as he ran, not really aware that he was still holding onto her until he suddenly wasn’t.

Her eyes were still watering from smoke, but she managed to focus enough, though blurrily, to recognize she was inside his trailer. She tried to speak, but that only exacerbated her cough by making her lungs spasm.
